How to read a planetary transit

A graha moving from one sign to the next is called a sign change, and the moment it crosses the boundary is the transit date. Slow bodies such as Saturn and Jupiter hold the same sign for years, so their transit dates double as long-range planning dates. Fast bodies such as the Moon and Mercury change sign every few days, so their calendars describe day-to-day conditions. Each body is also read by the houses it occupies from your birth Moon sign and ascendant, which is why a transit that matters to one chart is irrelevant to another.

Planet transit questions

What are planet transit dates?

A planetary transit is the period during which a graha occupies one zodiac sign. Each transit has an entry instant, when the body crosses the sign boundary, and an exit instant, when it leaves. Because these are astronomical positions rather than local conditions, the same transit dates apply everywhere on Earth.

Which planet changes sign fastest?

The Moon changes sign every two to three days, followed by Mercury at two to three weeks per sign. The slowest are Rahu and Ketu at about eighteen months per sign, followed by Saturn at two and a half years and Jupiter at close to a year.

Do I need a Kundli to use these dates?

No. These pages give the exact calendar of where each planet is and when it moves. To find out what that means for you personally, generate a free Kundli with your birth date, time and place, and read the transits against your chart.
